Someone explained it to me once and it made sense but I can't remember the words now. But it's something to the effect that you can be on "leave" from a place that isn't operational. I'll see if I can find out the "better words" today.

For those that were involved in the last shut down, what is the turnaround in the event that they strike a deal over the weekend? For instance, if they strike a deal on Saturday, then will we be immediately able to go back or is there a certain amount of time that it takes before we can go back?

Because technically you are not working for the government during a furlough.

Our health benefits premium will continue but Vision and Dental will not (we can contribute on our own to keep them going).

Use of leave for furloughed time will not be allowed and if you were scheduled to be on leave during that time, it will be revoked.
My husband was told yesterday but still has to show up Monday to get his papework. We were told the same thing about health benefits. As well as leave, even our agents in the field who are deemed essential will be unable to take any scheduled leave even though they will continu working.

A shutdown is now looking more likely. It'll be interesting to see how this goes.

I just talked with one of my neighbors, and he said he plans to spend at least one of the days hiking the Heritage Trail. You can hike the trail from my neighborhood to Great Falls National Park. The question is, if the park is closed will you be able to hike through it? I don't know of any gates on the river side. Would this mean the park would be empty? Or that there would be rangers telling hikers to scram?

I'm not sure I would want to be in a national park without any other people around--that might be a little spooky.

I heard that the official budget package has to be available for review for 72 hours or something like that. Anyone else have more info?

That's a new "rule" but not really a law. If they get a budget ready Saturday and the President can sign it before Monday, they won't worry about the rule.

They'll waive that in this case.

I suspect a compromise will be struck, and it'll be like TARP: some 70% of Democrats and 40% of Republicans voting for it, with the left-wing and right-wing parts of the parties voting against it.

I'd be more worried about some Tea Partier finding a way to delay the vote, for example by making someone read the whole bill out loud, or some other procedural loophole to delay a vote for 2-3 days.

Well that's better news that I had originally heard. Maybe there is hope.
