I know there have been a few comments about this work-in-progress Wegmans in the Ft. Belvoir area. But they were generally in other threads about other locations.

There was some information on the developer's website (now I'm looking back to see where I can find more info). Essentially, the only reference to specific dates was that a park would be created when the grocery store opens but NLT May 2013. So people were just assuming it'd be opening a while down the road.

I'm thinking with the BRAC changes taking full effect in September of this year, they might push ahead and have this thing ready to open sooner rather than later.

I'd just like to consolidate the info about this Wegman's here. I just moved to Kingstowne and would love to see that location up and running.

Early 2013 is what I've read. It was supposed to be late 2012 but there were some permit issues or something.

Ha! I was about to link you as a source (http://www.city-data.com/forum/18064724-post13.html)... I'm new on the forums (but as you'll see in my username, raised in this area haha). I thought it'd be nice to track more info on it.

I just moved from my apartment in Arlington out to a townhouse in Kingstowne and I'm fascinated with learning more about the area. I don't know much about Kingstowne.

And this person seemed to think 2012: http://www.city-data.com/forum/14105285-post27.html

I'm looking for the thread that had links to the developer site so I could at least keep an eye on it.

It's a nice area. Tons of restaurants and shopping. It's spread out a bit but the whole area is still close to Metro. The area certainly isn't lacking in grocery store options now- there's a Giant and Safeway right in Kingstowne and a Shoppers adjacent to it. If you expand the radius to about a 10 minute drive, you add 2 more Giants, another Safeway, a Target with groceries, and a Trader Joe's.

That said, there aren't any large grocery stores with the kind of selection that Wegmans' has. The closest thing to that would be the Harris Teeter up on Duke St. in Alexandria and that's a pain to get to from Kingstowne because of traffic on Van Dorn St. I think the Wegmans' will make a killing when it (finally) opens.

Don't remember the thread, but this is the developer's site:

Cool - this is great news for an area that needs more <pretty much anything>. There is at least a (smaller) Whole Foods on Old Keene Mill Rd. in West Springfield, though.

Kingstowne Wegmans Update | It's Good To Have A Friend In The Business (http://kimhannemann.com/2011/02/28/kingstowne-wegmans-update/ - broken link)

“It’s likely for us that this store wouldn’t open until at least 2013,” Natale said, “primarily because we have other stores slated for this year and next.”

Eh, there's obviously not much in the way of upscale shopping and dining, but there's a ton of mid-range and discount shopping, lots of chain restaurants, and a lot of decent little local eateries (mostly ethnic food).

Many people overlook the Mediterranean Bakery on Pickett Street (about two blocks behind the Giant at the intersection of Van Dorn and Edsall Road). Although they specialize in Middle Eastern breads and pastries, they also have a good selection of meats, cheeses, spices, oils and teas as well as a good selection of high-end European grocery items.
