Hi all...I will be moving to the DC area in a few months and was hoping to get some advice on a few areas. I know this type of question is asked and answer a million times in the forum, but I'm wondering about two neighborhoods/areas specifically.

I'm looking at an apartment in the Long Branch Creek area in Arlington (Avalon at Arlington Square), and also at an apartment near the Van Dorn Metro (Reserve at Eisenhower).

My fiance and I have two dogs and love to go on walks, so I am wondering about how safe these two areas are. Even more, I am concerned about her taking the dogs out alone at night, and wanted to get some of your thoughts about the safety of these areas.

I am new to the forum, although I have appreciated reading many of the other posts about areas in Northern Virginia. Thank you in advance for your help!

The neighborhood near the Reserve is pretty safe but I wouldn't walk alone late at night. There are usually alot of people walking between UPS and Van Dorn so that section would probably be OK.

In the other direction, it is primarily industrial and kind of desolate. Once you get past the Humane Society you will see alot more people out walking because there is a bike and walking trail nearby as well as another townhouse community.

I haven't heard of anyone getting jumped in the area but I would check the Alexandria Police website to check on any incidents.

I lived across Glebe Road from the Long Branch Creek area (Parkway, it's the tiny triangle between Glebe and 395.)

It might be okay for a single person, but I wouldn't recommend it for a family. The Avalon area is definitely better than where I lived. I'll go into why but don't want to bore you about schools, neighbors, etc., if those are not as much of a factor for you -- also the neighbors won't be since you're living in the nice area.

There's nothing but a few barbershops and dentists in the Avalon area. If you go along 28th Street, you hit the elementary and middle schools, and there's an ageing strip mall (which got renovated a bit) with a Giant and a couple of restaurants (Arlington Diner is nice, the Latin American place is okay but a bit overpriced for the quality of food.)

In the other direction, it's gotten better with the connector trail between the Four Mile Run Trail and the W&OD Trail, you're walkable to Shirlington's dining/shopping area. It wasn't built until we had moved out, had it been built a few years earlier we might have tolerated living where we were more.

Thanks stpickrell! We don't have kids, so I'm not quite as concerned yet about schools, etc., but your comments about the Avalon area are very helpful. I'm glad to hear the area isn't too bad, at least to live in for a year or two before we look for something more permanent. We really appreciate your input!

If anyone else knows anything about these areas, your opinions would be appreciated!

I lived near the Van Dorn metro area for 5 years. Around the Metro, I would not be worried. Now going North on Van Dorn and around Edsall Rd and S Whiting St and closer to Landmark Mall, I'd start worrying. Not Beirut or Compton, but I would not recommend a young woman to walk around those areas at midnight.

Well, Long Branch has M. Slavin & Sons Seafood [Crabs?]:

eat fish, live longer (http://www.mslavin.com/Washington.htm - broken link)

Yummy, yummy, yummy, I got Slavin's in my tummy...

Seriously, though, I'll probably be moving not far from there at some point in the future.
