I LOVED the Hecht's children's department. So sad that it's not there anymore to shop for my future grandchildren! After it closed I stopped by Sears occasionally but haven't in a very long time. I still go to Landmark a couple times a year to the tailor shop there but that's all.

I stopped going to Landmark when Hecht's turned to Macy's and the TicketMaster went away. I had many a fond memory of camping out for tickets at Landmark. As to why it it still open, I say voodoo. My in-laws go there frequently, but they are creatures of habit as well. That may also be why it is still open, people who go there out of habit are enough to keep it open.

I think Landmark is on one or more busy bus lines, so people from the area who don't have cars shop there, including teenagers.

Which would make you think they'd have more stores like they used to. Last I heard (and that was quite awhile ago) the open air redevelopment thing is pretty much toast.

Those who are using the bus of necessity, because they can't afford cars, probably don't spend a lot when they go.

Like Springfield Mall, Landmark is going to be redeveloped. If there's enough action at Landmark to pay the taxes or even turn a small profit for the owners....why not leave it open?

Planning and financing such a large project takes time...would boarding the place up in the meantime be a more attractive option?

I think you have a good point.

Each company that has owned this mall has sat on the property and has done nothing to improve it. I think they are waiting for Alexandria to implement its Van Dorn Redevelopment plan. If property values rise in the area, then perhaps it will be worth it to reinvent the mall.

I wish the City of Alexandria would have a more assertive economic development policy. And I wish there were better shopping options on the West End.
