I've had State Farm since I was 16 years old. I've had a few claims - broken windshields and such - one time my car actually got shot. And I also had a vehicle that was totaled in New York. By the time i got back home from my trip - which was the following week (accident was on a Saturday) I had a check in the mail for the value of my car. My husband and I have our bikes through them too (but I admit that they are more $$) but I like to keep everything one one policy.

if you have a good relationship with costco ie spend a lot of $$ Go with ameriprise. Costco due diligence monitors every transaction and will let you know if they had to "step in" and take care of business. One year old and couldnt be happier. rates are also very good. ck em out, go to costco.com/services

I have GEICO and they are fine.

Their customer service is fine. I had a major accident (someone crossed into my lane and crashed into my car) and the customer service was easy to deal with.

I checked my cars, and it was the same price though. I use the same agent my parents use so I felt a little awkward cancelling, but he never made a big deal about it.
Oneasterisk, I don't want to give my personal info to these companies. But I have not heard of any rates lower than what I pay (less than $1000 per year for auto and home combined, with generous coverage -- I could have chosen different options to lower premiums further). I also am willing to pay a bit more rather than switch because I think the risk of cancellation is higher if you've been with the co. a short time.

I have nationwide for 3 years now, had allstate when I was a teen driver on my parents insurance (they are really high) then I had geico for a little bit but switched to nationwide because I got a much lower rate on a better policy and geico charged me a silly installment fee each month because I did'nt pay my policy in one lump sum but rather monthy (what is insane!). Nationwide has multiple policy discount, accident forgiveness and other perks for example they sent me a letter because my policy is about to renew and have me new things on my policy for free and said if I didnt want them I could call them a get a discount off my policy instead. One thing I really liked was that my agent sat down with me when I fist switched to them and went over everything with me and told me things I didnt need and found ways to save me money.. I will keep them for a long time.

I used Progressive & Geico for awhile and price was pretty good, never had any incidents though. Recently switched to State Farm to consolidate with my wife's car insurance and get a better deal due to multi-car. Had a very minor incident shortly after switched and they were awesome in handling it. Don't think I'll be switching again for a long time.

The best insurance companies most people have never heard of. The "name-brand" companies listed so far are among the worst.

The true measure of an insurance company is not how they handle fender benders but their response to very serious situations...like a really bad at-fault auto crash. The best companies will vigorously defend you in court with the objective of keeping any judgement(s) within the limits of your coverage. The lousy ones will pay the limit of the policy and bail....potentially leaving you with a large excess judgement. That's when people can lose everything they have.

I don't try to save a buck on insurance...it's too important if you have assets to protect. The Chubb Group insures all our stuff, both personal and commercial. They are even one of the very few companies that insure classic (wooden) motor yachts like our 57' Chris*Craft. Makes sense, I guess....Chubb started out as an ocean marine insurer back in the days of the windjammers. Chubb is nowhere near the cheapest, but like anything, you get what you pay for. It's unlikely I'll ever have to sue them to force them to live up to the terms of my policies.

Geico was wonderful about a stolen car claim. I couldn't ask for better.
Nationwide who covers my homeowners policy were jerks. Took a week to have claim adjuster out, gave me a no account contractor reference and then sent me a letter saying "although you did not file a claim < well under my deductible> we had it on record that you requested a claim. *&()%$

I agree. The Chubb Group and Amica are two such companies. I chose Amica over Chubb Group to suit my covergare requirements. I would highly recommend Amica.
