I also agree with vermonter and I always look through the Val-Paks for restaurant coupons, oil change coupons, etc. I like them because they seemed to be targeted to places within 10 miles of my home and they usually have pretty good deals for non-chain restaurants. I also like that on the coupons you can sometimes get an abbreviated menu on them.

I also have to agree with trying Groupon. I just started looking at that and purchased my first groupon to a local food place that I was hesitant to try. It will basically give me $20 of food for $10. I don't know what the costs to you are but it is a way to get people in.

The other thought is direct mail. Just mail a flyer/menu to everyone within 5 miles of you and have a coupon in it. Don't stick the flyer in the mailbox or on people's door, just mail it. I would open something like that.

Like everyone suggest, I looked into internet ad. I found a site called [domain blocked due to spam], which allows you to choose the city you are interested, and provide all the local news, events or activities. Is anyone familiar with the site?

I frequent that site, and there is A LOT of discussion dedicated to new buisnesses opening in the Gainesville/Bristow/Haymarket area. That is how I found out about many of our favorite local places.

Default Reciprocal Advertising

A very very low cost way is to find other local businesses - any type that the clientèle you are trying to attract might frequent - dry cleaners, hair salons, local clubs etc.. and offer to post an ad in your restaurant in exchange for letting you post an ad in their establishment. Good Luck!!

Sell gift cards on restaurant.com

Also target a Facebook ad to people within 10 miles of your restaurant. Will probably only cost you like $1 - $1.50 per click.

As mentioned previously, create a facebook page for your restaurant. (Look at some other restaurant pages for ideas.) Email or call each of your local friends and ask them to "like" your page, and to write a positive comment on your restaurant's wall from their facebook account.

Next, ask each of your friends if they would be willing to recommend your restaurant facebook page to their friends. When they say yes, you can temporarily make them administrators of your page. This enables them to recommend your page to all of their local facebook friends. Of course do this also from your own personal facebook page if you have one.

If you serve breakfast, lunch, or brunch on Sundays, you can inexpensively place an ad with a coupon in the bulletins of nearby churches.

And definitely a website! Include a link to one or more mapping sites so people can find you.

Join your local Chamber of Commerce:

Prince William Chamber of Commerce

Members like to patronize each other's businesses. You could host a free networking event, inviting all the members so they can socialize while checking your place out.

Will your restaurant have a separate room for special events and private gatherings, or an area where a larger group could share a meal together? If so you can invite local groups and clubs to have a lunch or dinner there, and give them a group rate.

A lot of places have a jar in a visible location for people to drop in their business cards, for a weekly or monthly drawing for a free meal for two. This is a good way to capture email addresses. Send a personal email thanking them for coming, and invite them to come back. Then create an email list and send a monthly or seasonal brief newsletter telling them of any special seasonal menu options, special events, discounts, and suggestions that they book your place for birthday parties, holiday parties, rehearsal dinners, graduation celebrations, etc. -- whatever is applicable to the type of restaurant.

A discount for a military ID might be a good idea.
