Why are the public school students getting out of school two hours early on Friday? Is it to start the holiday weekend early? I thought this was strange when they started doing it on the Wed. before Thanksgiving holiday a few years ago.

Maybe I'm just a little jealous since I never got out early before holidays way back when I was in school!

Probably helps ease traffic at times when lots of people are beginning to hit the roads!

Especially this weekend when so many bikers are expected to arrive for Rolling Thunder.

FCPS did it for employees since they had not had a pay increase:

Key Points:
  • In recognition of the fact that employees are not receiving an increase in financial compensation in FY 2011, the School Board would like to provide early release on two days to give families and employees an early start to the winter break (December 22, 2010) and the Memorial Day weekend (May 27, 2011). This early release will be similar to the early release day before the Thanksgiving holiday, and principals and program managers are encouraged to release both instructional and support employees where program operations permit. If this recommendation is approved, the 2010-2011 school calendar will be revised accordingly and the community will be notified in various ways (to include a Keep in Touch message).
Recommendation:
  • That the School Board approve two early release days for all students and for FCPS employees, where program operations permit, on December 22, 2010, and May 27, 2011.

People are paranoid now since that big snowstorm in January when they let people out 2 hours early and EVERYBODY left 2 hours early and jammed the roads

This is the second year in a row for the early release before Memorial Day. There was also an early closing before winter break. As far as Thanksgiving, I believe we have had a 2 hour early release every year during my 18 years with FCPS.

So is early release not a typical thing in VA? What about PWCSD? In both UT and CA (in the school districts I've had my kids in) every Friday is early release day. Schools is out at 1:20 pm. I hate it, especially with half-day kindergarten. They are in school for 1 hour 45 minutes! I just found out that my child entering kindergarten in the fall will be full-day (which I am actually worried about because she still naps during the day) but I never thought to question whether there would be half days or not.

In Fairfax, most elementary schools release early on Monday. Prince William used to have an early release day mid-week but they did away with it a few years ago.

As far as kindergarten, there are still some schools with half-day, but the proposal is to have them all full day over the next year or two. Actually, I think the school board has a final vote on the budget tonight. It is interesting thought that I have been reading some lately from parents who prefer the 1/2 day program over the full day. The main discussion has been about equity across the county.

The board voted tonight to approve the budget. The remaining 37 schools will go to full day kindergarten next year.
