We are used to tons of trails in the rain forest living in Vancouver. Are there many hiking trails other than W&OD trail? We always have our dog off leash. Is that allowed?

Safety

Above is the link to the friends of the W &OD website.

"Pets must be kept on a leash and under control at all times."

I have seen people taking their dog off leash when hiking in the Prince William Forest National Park, but it's not allowed. There are some trails there that aren't frequently travelled, so I think a lot of people feel they can get away with it there.
I think they did have a special event a couple weeks ago, where dogs WERE allowed off leash, but it was only for that special event.

Default Northern Virginia Dog Parks

Here's a link to an earlier post on dog-friendly walking trails. You may also want to check out the many off-leash dog parks in Northern Virginia. Here's a link to a map of Northern Virginia Dog Parks. Hope this helps.

I probably wouldn't let a dog run off leash on a trail here that's used by bike riders like the W&OD or Mount Vernon. Best to find some dirt ones.

Many people have unleashed dogs at Seneca Park. I'm not sure if that's against the rules or not but I see a lot of them. I'd bring a leash, just in case. Don't go to the Doggie Splash yet, though. The river is way too high, so it's not safe for the dogs right now.
