Interestingly, I was stopped for speeding a couple of months ago on the Beltway. The VA state trooper spoke maybe 10 words to me in total. He asked NO questions. It was pretty clear he was only interested in issuing the ticket.

If you're not trying to hide anything, and an officer asks you a few basic questions, isn't it just easier to answer them? I'm not sure I'd consent to a search for no good reason but I wouldn't be difficult and refuse to answer his questions like where are you going, etc.

It isn't being difficult. I'm a law-abiding citizen. It's none of the police officer's business where I'm going. Or where I've been.

You understand not everyone is law abiding right? It's pretty hard for police to determine who is who without talking to people. I do think it's being difficult if all they're asking you is basic stuff like where are you headed, where are you coming from, etc.

I'M a law-abiding citizen. I'm not interested in "everyone." You understand that you are under no obligation to tell a police officer where you're going, or where you've been, right? It's not your obligation to help him do his job. He can ask me, and I'll decline to answer. It's none of his business. It's an invasion of privacy.

If you want to answer those questions, that's on you.

I never said you were obligated to cooperate with police officers. I'm simply disagreeing with your assertion that you're not being difficult and potentially complicating an otherwise very uncomplicated situation(if you are in fact law abiding).

I get it. I risk antagonizing the cops. I guess I should have said, "It's not about being difficult." It's about not answering intrusive questions I am not required to answer. You said [you were] "not sure I'd consent to a search for no good reason." Why? If that could potentially make a situation with police less complicated? If you've got nothing to hide, why not allow the search? You draw the line at unreasonable searches (maybe). I draw the line at unwarranted, intrusive questions. If the police stop me for speeding, they have NO NEED to know where I'm going.
