Hi - I would like to know about Glenkirk Elementary school. I have heard that it is a good school - but I would like to know the parent's impressions of whether they felt:

1 - If their kids were challenged by the coursework?
2 - If a student shows an area they are excelling at does the teacher take interest in challenging this students' interest further?
3 - Atmosphere - Have you found it to be an academically focused classroom setting - or is it more of a teach to the SOL standards?
4 - Stand on Discipline In the Classroom - I understand with large classes this is hard - but what is Glenkirk's attitude towards this? Would you say their policy is a good one or is it more laid back and becomes a battle of wills....where children disrupt the other kids for months or until the teacher can take it no more before some action is taken? (this is one of my biggest concerns)
5 - Quality of Education - Do you feel that your child is getting a quality education? With so many private schools popping up/Private K's I wonder about this.
6 - Gifted Education - What is this program like?
7 - Facilities - I have only been in the office - so I don't know what the school cafeteria looks like or anything. I do see that kids have to run around a parking lot circle and am pretty opposed to this....it seems silly when there is land behind the school....Any thoughts?

Thanks so much! I really appreciate it..we are getting info on private schools but of course the cost is a major factor......

Glenkirk is going to change a LOT next year with Piney Branch opening, so I think it's hard to really know exactly what it will look like. After all, the population is going to cut by about 40% by most estimates.

We have had no problems whatsoever. Our kids are getting a great education, and the teachers seem to customize curriculum to the child's needs - give kids who need more challenges more, and kids who need more help more as well. We have kids at both the academically gifted and special education ends of the spectrum.

No discipline issues that we've seen. But I guess, to me, growing up in public schools, a class of 25 isn't huge. It's just life. There are some annoying kids sometimes, just like there are annoying adults. You learn to deal with them. But nothing dangerous. There are some kids with special needs who have quirks that may seem disruptive to someone who doesn't know the child; but personally, I like that my kids are learning how to work with people of differing abilities. I don't want them in a classroom of nothing but academically gifted people.

Facilities are nice. The classrooms seem well-appointed, and the other common areas are well-kept.
