Pell's is a Fairfax institution. There are great crab houses throughout the MD/VA/DC area, but if you find yourself in Fairfax then Pell's is where you go for crabs. Gotta agree with some previous posters though. Crabs have gotten expensive. I used to go a couple of times a season. Now I'm lucky if I can afford to go once a year.

Yeah, if they are expensive - that is ok as long as they are super fresh and good! I don't think my husband has had crabs in over a year now....maybe it was two years - whenever that guy was on Rt. 28... At any rate - this will be his one time this year...apparently along with my neighbor!

I'm not much of a seafood expert. For those of you who are, what do you think of the crabs at Costco? The ones they occasionally sell along with scallops and lobster tails from a stand in the back of the store. I see them for sale, and have been tempted to try them, but never have.

Have you ever ventured out to the actual Wharf on Maine Avenue in dc? That's where most of the vendors throughout the area buy their crabs from. One of my good friend's parents owned
The Shrimp Connection on rt-234 for a few years, and they used to go out to the Wharf all the time to pick up their crabs that they sold.
You'll get the biggest selection of sizes there and it's where they all originate from. Usually if you haggle with them on price, you can get a ton of extra crabs tossed in for free. They'll steam and season them for you right on the docks, and it's a fun area to walk around in general to see all the seafood. The two primary vendors on the wharf docks are:

I assume that you're referring to the large dungeoness crabs that they sell at Costco? They are pretty good and have a ton of meat in them that is easy to get to. Usually one crab is more than enough for one person. The meat is not as sweet as blue crabs, but not as salty as Alaskan king crabs. I think the only drawback to them is that they're already cooked and then frozen, so the meat isn't as fresh tasting and looses a bit of the sweetness.
If you're up for cooking them yourself - the chinese grocery store, called The Great Wall, in Merrifield sells them live; they're typically $15 or so each depending on weight. They're quite the delicacy when steamed fresh, and I actually prefer them to Blue crabs since they're so much easier to eat yet still taste just about as good as blue crabs (gasp!!
that's probably a sin to say in the chesapeake bay area!)

A few of my neighbors down here on the Bay (summer place in Dorchester County) are watermen and they tell me that crab prices are down. Their numbers have bounced back big time after a couple years of restrictions on the harvest.

Anyone know what the 1/2 bushel price of large male crabs are going for right now? Just wondering. I've seen a lot of $140s and $150s...is that about right for a 1/2 bushel or way too much?

We usually drive past it around noon until about 4 pm... but Wawa might know for sure! Please let us know how they are, maybe I'll get my husband to stop there next time.
