Hey everyone,

I am moving from New York to Frederick, MD and accepted a job in Reston, VA. I know its about 40 miles but can anyone tell me what the traffic conditions are like around 7am as I would be starting work at 8am or 8:30am. Thanks

See the response I left for you, in the Maryland section where you had posted.

I don't think that you will be able to leave Frederick at 7:00 AM and make it to Reston at 8:00 AM - but 8:30 AM shouldn't be a problem. The two options both take about an hour with no traffic, but will have lots of traffic during your commute.

Hwy 15 through Leesburg will be slow going on 15 and then a fast expensive ($5.25) toll road ride - or a slow painful trip on Hwy 7.

I 270 to I 495 to the toll road will be slow going on I 270 as you approach I 495. I 495 may or may not be slow and the toll road ($2.00) to Reston will be speed limit driving.

I've never done this drive as a commute, but FWIW the section of 15 near the Potomac can get very congested. The road winds quite a bit in that section, and that slows the trucks (and they have to use 15 to cross the river since there isn't another bridge west of the beltway). From what I hear, 15 cannot be widened or straightened because it is historic.

Have you already gotten a place in Frederick? If not, I'd recommend moving to the the VA side of the river if you can.

LOL Is the commute really that bad? Are we talking an hour or more like two hours?

There isn't a toll on 15 (but it is a two lane road at points and really curvy and hilly and busy. You can take 15 to the greenway/toll road and that's where you will pay the $5.25 and yes it is both ways. You can also take 15 to Rte 7 which will be really slow.

Like another PP suggested if you aren't locked into Frederick I would look in VA.

Is the $5.25 toll just one way or is it on the return trip as well?

I would think at least 1.5 hours if there isn't an accident.
