Specific Herndon Schools (Winchester, Fairfax: townhomes, public schools, camper)

Hi All,

We are looking for townhomes in Herndon, specifically the one by Winchester Homes at Adams St & Van Buren St (20170). Its north of 267. On this board I have heard a lot of negative comments of this area of Herndon. Is it a no-go area?

The builder website says the schools are Herndon Elementary, Herndon Middle and Herndon High school. Does anybody how this schools are?

It sounds like you haven't made an onsite visit yet. Adams & Van Buren are in the heart of the strip shopping center district on the east side of Herndon. You have a Hispanic shopping center on one side and a KMart shooping center with Pollo Campero on the other. Across Elden street are all commercial sites as well. I would look elsewhere if you have kids, especially if they're likely to want to go outside to play. The schools aren't well-regarded also.

All of Herndon is north of 267. All of its public schools are part of the Fairfax County Public Schools system, consistently rated as one of the best in the country. You will rather consistently hear baseless criticism of the town resulting from focus that reactionary anti-immigrant groups put on it after a day-laborer center was established. The population of Herndon is about 25% Hispanic. This compares to 7-10% for most nearby communities. <Ichoro> is correct that the intersection of Van Buren & Adams is just a couple of blocks north of the one-mile or so stretch of malls that extends eastward from the town center along Elden Street and serves as the town's principal shopping district. With all the turns onto and off of Elden Street that result, traffic through that stretch can be slow, but there is nothing otherwise untoward about the area. As it's less than 15 minutes from me and I'll be out later doing some errands, I'll try swing by Van Buren & Adams for a quick look-see. Can't hurt...

In my honest opinion....I would not live inside the town of Herndon.....for the same reasons as stated before in the other posts....Herndon Elementary and Middle are both schools I would not want my young children enrolled there....especially Herndon Middle....Herndon High School, although it has its problems, I believe is an okay school. With that said, look for homes around the high school area...it's a much nicer area than where you are looking.....good luck!

The 25 percent figure for the Hispanic population is per the 2000 census. It is now over 40 percent. That's why the town council finds itself frequently grappling with many of the issues regarding the new immigrant population.

There was a immigrant march from Herndon Intermediate to Elden St last week to protest the loss of county funding for the day laborer center.
