Hello:

I will be heading over there next weekend. The place closes at five and I may need to kill a few hours in the afternoon/early evening. I will have a teenager in tow. Thanks.

Well you're not too far from Old Town Alexandria.

What do they have there besides the ghost tour (which is at night fittingly)?

That's been gone for several years. They remodeled Hybla Valley Center and added a bunch of shops where that used to be. I don't think there's too much else around here (I live by the Estate) that would interest a teen unless you want to walk or ride bikes along the river on the Mount Vernon Trail. .

There is plenty to do in Old Town Alexandria. There are boat trips from down on the waterfront including a water taxi over to National Harbor in MD. Right by those is the Torpedo Factory if you're at all interested in art. There are tons of little shops nearby along King Street. Most would be open in the evening.

What time are you getting to the Estate? Most people don't stay more than three or four hours. You can probably do it justice in two, depending how long you want to hang out in the gift shop and/or food court. They do sell a combo river cruise/admission ticket.

There is the park there too or you can hike out in Dyke Marsh. Not sure a teen would find any of those all that exciting.

I don't think the people at Mt. Vernon do. I have seen independent companies that do. I don't like the boats they use, however. They have A/C, which is no kind of way to boat.

Taking a boat to this harbor seems like a good idea. Any suggestions for companies and parking? Thanks.

You can buy boat tickets through Mount Vernon. Here's all the info on it:
