Braddock Road Metro area
Two friends of my daughter are looking for an apartment to share. They are wondering about the area near the Braddock Road Metro. I'm not familiar with that area at all. Any input on various options there, in terms of safety, quality, and cost?

In general, it's a nice enough area. To the west, you have the GW Middle School and the southern end of Del Ray. Nothing to complain about there. To the east, you have the northern part of Old Town. It isn't as posh as further south, but it's still worthwhile. Most of that area was built up in the 1920's and teens, so you would have something of an 'old school' look and feel to things. There are a few newer buildings mixed in as well. If you were buying in that area, things would be in the $500-800K range for the most part, so this is no slum. It's just not the spiffiest part of town...

Hi Yankeesfan,
I would go and check out where they found a place they are interested in first. Right across from the Braddock metro is Braddock place, (office buildings, condo's and apts), it seems pretty nice but the next street over is public housing and looks a little rough at times. If you are standing at the metro you can look across the parking lot and see both side by side. I personally would not walk by myself at night from the metro through those areas. Twice during the day I have see a drug deal, or what looked like drug deal on the street (someone handing someone money and then that person handing them a packet of something) right there on wythe street and on pendleton st. which are both right there by the metro. There are always groups of people standing around and one time a young man jumped out from behind a parked vehicle and acted like he was going to jump in front of my car. Luckly I slammed on my brakes and swerved but they all stood around having a great laugh about it! Now if you go up braddock road some on the other side of the metro that is Del Ray and further up Braddock road around Russel Rd and further are some great neighborhoods, Braddock heights, Beverly Hills and Rosemont but the houses are super duper expensive, around $700k to over 2.5 million. Plus just last week a woman was attacked in her driveway in Rosemont.
Sorry not sure if that was helpful at all but I just thought I would share what I knew.
Good luck!

The west side of the metro is more desirable IMO. Not that the east side is necessarily bad, but there are a couple big housing projects and a big homeless shelter within a few blocks on of the metro stop on the east side that bring some crime into the area. I don't think people are generally directly affected by the crime if they don't live in (or hang out at) the projects or the shelter, but it could lower the quality of life somewhat.
Plenty of people pay good money to live on the east side of the metro stop though.
