I'm at work in Old Town Alexandria. Spooky creepy. It opened a few file drawers but that's all. Another 5 seconds would have had a lot of stuff falling over & off shelves, though. Glad it stopped when it did. Now I'm worried about how my house fared -- I've got a gas hot water heater. Can't get thru to the next door neighbors to ask them to take a quick recon.

Anyone in Annandale inside the Beltway that has a report?

We were told to evac the building so I grabbed my jacket and motorcycle helmet on the way out. I figured I'd wear the helmet in the building and I got a couple of laughs from my coworkers

Pretty much non-event, but they said we could leave at our discretion. So I'm home and monitoring things from VPN.

My poor coworkers are stuck where they work. Apparently everyone panicked and made a mad dash for the their cars. The garage is bumper to bumper, gridlocked, not moving. She's sitting on a bench waiting for it to thin out. Her normal quitting time is 2:30 but she thinks it will probably be 4:30 until she can finally get out of there.

I was working in DC when it started shaking. I thought it was just construction work so I joked that maybe it was an earthquake And then it started shaking like crazy and we're all like "we're outta here!"

I called my wife who said everything is okay, and that my newborn baby girl just slept through the whole event

This is just an average quake folks. This size and much larger happen a few times per year in California and western states. While large earthquakes are uncommon and rare on the East Coast, it is still wise to be somewhat prepared. Maybe not to the extent as Californians and folks out West, but an emergency kit, water, dry food, flashlights, etc... are basic things that can save a life. Out west we know in a total disaster like an earthquake the government, police, and firefighters will be overwhelmed so you gotta be ready to take care of yourself. Especially on the East Coast where the police and firefighters will likely be just as shocked as you are that a 7.0+ earthquake happened. With many of the old homes in Virginia not being built for earthquakes (brick is like the WORST material for earthquakes) you don't want to be caught sorry if the very unlikely, but as we saw today, big earthquake happens. The attitude towards earthquakes should always be "when" not "if." You can google emergency packs online and they will have kits. They would be useful in other emergencies as well.

Really felt it in Herndon! Scared the s**t out of me as I realized what was happening and thought of the building crumbling underneath me. Grabbed my stuff and headed for the stairwell, to the garage and then flew to my daughters' daycare to get her. i don't rattle easily but this sure shook me up in more ways than one!
