Default 2011 NoVa SAT Scores

Here are the 2011 SAT scores for Fairfax (blue) and Arlington (red) high schools, as reported by the College Board. In prior years, stpickrell and/or I have compiled this information for those who are interested, and I see that we continue to have a stream of people moving to the area who are looking at different areas and schools.

I looked for the scores in Loudoun, but I couldn't find scores as reported to the schools by the College Board, so they are not included (yet).

All the usual disclaimers and observations (such as individual students, not schools, take tests) apply, so please ignore this if it's not a matter of interest (and, of course, look for another thread if you wish to discuss the Cooch, Peter Singer, Richard Florida and/or Aristotle).

Loudoun hasn't provided the scores for individual schools as reported by the College Board, at least not in a press release like other jurisdictions. The average in Loudoun was 1592 (vs. 1654 in Fairfax, 1637 in Montgomery, and 1623 in Arlington).

The Prince William site is down, but the average score was 1490 according to a press release earlier this week.

The maximum is now 2400 (Reading/Math/Writing), not 1600.

TC Williams?

yay for annandale, but that shows that IB programs (like GT centers) are useful for raising reported average scores, which I guess is why IB (and GT centers) are often located by FCPS in lower scoring schools. Gaming test scores! YAY!

Also, The cooch, Peter Singer, Richard Florida, and Aristotle walk into a bar. A. Is it really a bar if it gets over 50% of its revenue from food? Answers - Florida:Only if its a gay bar. Singer: does it serve meat? Aristotle:The unquestioned bar is not worth drinking in Cooch:wait, theres a law about that, no?
B. Is it worth living within walking distance of the bar to avoid driving drunk - Florida:If theres housing with lots of bars nearby, Google will relocate to be close by. Aristotle:Lets talk and walk. Singer:The utility from driving further MAY exceed the utility value of a life, especially if its SOMEONE ELSES GRANDMA. Cooch:why dont you want someone to drive? Is this about that global warming garbage?

correct.

Though many colleges do not look at the writing test for admissions. At least one told us that was because they do not see it as a reliable indicator. I do not recall if they said it was actually a bad indicator, or if they simply weren't sure yet.

TC announced that it had five National Merit Semi-Finalists this year, but I don't think ACPS released the average SAT scores for 2011 yet. The average for 2010 was 1442.

I don't think there's any proven correlation between SAT scores and whether a school has an IB program. It's actually the other argument that is typically made here - namely, that IB schools in NoVa tend to have lower SAT scores. The scores are correlated more strongly with the income levels of the families whose students attend these schools than with IB/AP programs per se.

Thanks for the joke. It was "refreshing," though hopefully not a prelude to a hijacking.

The College Board ascribes significance to all three tests and suggests that a combined score of 1550 serves as a benchmark of college readiness. However, some schools don't pay much attention to the writing portion.

well thats not really surprising. The college board is the org that administers the tests. Its their business.

You are correct some schools dont pay much attention to the writing portion. In fact some schools say that they pay ZERO attention to it. They use the essay, and grades in classes that involve writing instead, as they did before the writing portion was instituted. There are real, and good, questions, about the ability of the conditions of the SAT test to say anything valid about writing ability.

The more selective colleges generally only look at the SAT in general as one portion of the application.
