I've had t-mobile for several years and the reason was in the beginning it was one of the few carriers that had international service at reasonable rates. And the thing I love is that I keep my same phone number no matter where I am in the world so when people call me -- it is like they are calling me while in the US and I get the charges, they don't. And t-mobile is GSM so if I want I can pop in a local chip of whatever country I'm in also. The only other service offered like that way back when was AT&T and they were outrageously priced. I don't think they were GSM at the time though and I don't think there are now either, but I could be wrong. I will have to check things out when I get moved.

Here's a site I found interesting....where cell towers are, who owns them, etc.

That did used to be the case, but I don't think it is any more. The WMATA website notes on its services page that only Verizon Wireless will work in the tunnels. Metro would obviously like some MONEY from the others who might want to step up...

Verizon is a major carrier in the DC Metro area...you'll probably find that the CDMA carriers offer the best call quality in this area too. T-Mobile offer similiar plans a lot cheaper, but I've been told numerous times that their call quality isn't very stellar even in the DC Metro area.

I have AT&T and my service has gone down hill very quickly since they took over Cingular. I don't know what changed when it went from Cingular to AT&T, but I will be switching providers when my contract is up in February.
