Looking to lease for the first couple years and for commuting purposes we have narrowed it down to the Manassas, Woodbridge, Springfield area. Also thought about Loudoun County such as Leesburg, Sterling but I have no idea what the commute would be like to Le'nfant Plaza from this area.

Any information provided on these areas is greatly appreciated!!

The commute from Manassas to L'Enfant Plaza would be long. The closest of the places you listed would be Springfield. I just moved to West Springfield and I really like it. Its quiet and the epitomy of suburbia. You can take the blue line to work if you metro. There's the VRE commuter trains as well. Welcome to VA.

How do you want to commute?
Public transpiration? Slug? Drive?

I did the Leesburg to NW DC commute for awhile (via commuter bus). It's no picnic. I was spending around 2.5 - 3 hours a day just commuting.

If you want to do Loudoun, Go for Sterling. There are a lot of nice areas and it's still long, but not nearly as long as Leesburg.

The Woodbridge/Springfield corridor is going to be your best bet. Springfield is the closest and would allow you to easily slug or Metro in.

For Woodbridge, slugging to L'Enfant is great. There is also a bus.

Going out to the west (Manassas, Sterling, Leesburg) is not going to be as easy.

Thanks everyone. What about using the VRE from Manassas since I do not plan on driving and will be utilizing public transportation.

ChristineVA, Any parts of Woodbridge/ Springfield that I should stay away from. I have a special needs daughter so the safer the better.

The West Springfield/Burke area is nice. I lived in Burke (which is next to West Springfield) for 6 years and really liked it there. Plus, less than a mile from a VRE station (at Burke Lake and Rolling Roads, if that helps you at all).

Loudoun to L'Enfant would be a very irritating commute. I highly recommend against going that far west for you.

Of course, there are pockets within Woodbridge that you would want to avoid. Alternatively, there are very good areas with great schools within Woodbridge. Does your daughter require special services at school? I have heard the Fairfax County schools do a decent job with that so, if that's the case, you would want to look in Springfield.

The following areas in Woodbridge are good:

Most all neighborhoods branching off of Old Bridge Road (known as "Lake Ridge).

Dale City neighborhoods at the upper end of the alphabet (neighborhoods that start with "P" and up).

Dale City neighborhoods located off of Cardinal Drive with the possible exception of the "E" neighborhood (although it's not bad there at all, just not sure about the schools).

Montclair (which is technically Dumfries) but has an entrance off Cardinal which really makes it feel more like Woodbridge but it's a great neighborhood and feeds into really good schools.
