Default Should neighborhoods of 1000 square foot single family homes be converted to high density?

Throughout the Washington area are huge neighborhoods of single family homes on relatively large lots that were built in the 1940s and 50s. These homes are as small as 800 square feet and were designed for the families of soliders coming back from WW2. In many cases these homes were designed to be temporary structures. No one thought they would still be standing 60 years later.

Now many of these homes and neighborhoods are eye sores and they are located on large lots close to job centers and major highways. It is not practical for so few dwelling units per acre located so close to the center City. If this was China they would be destroyed and people would be relocated to new dense developments.

What should be done in the future with low density very small single family homes in the middle of vital Northern VA Suburban Cities, that were built in the 50s that are now out of date?
