I'm a gay 40 year old single male looking for an apt. I work in old town and don't know many people in town. Trying to keep rent around $2200. Have a car. Was considering Clarendon or Pentagon City, but not sure which would be better fit. Also considering Rosslyn. Want to be close to the city, have a decent commute and close to a good gym. Want an area where I can meet other people, including gays. Would love any advice. Thanks!

I think you could find a place in or near Clarendon for that price. Rosslyn will be harder parking-wise, and it's quiet at night. I don't see it as being much of a gay mecca. I think I've heard there's a gay bar in Crystal City, or maybe it was Pentagon City. They're next to each other. Either one will be cheaper than Clarendon. Good luck!

What's wrong with Old Town itself?

The stereotypical gay answer would be Dupont Circle, $2200 ought to get you in the door there.

I'd go with any of the neighborhoods you mentioned. It really depends on your needs and expectations. Both Arlington and Alexandria are gay friendly, but Pentagon City is more of a collection of apartment buildings than it is a neighborhood. Clarendon would be my choice in NoVa.

Freddie's in Crystal City is a gay bar. Decent brunch.

Thanks for all your advice. I appreciate it. I'm not much of a fan of Old Town and most of the apartment buildings are outside of the downtown Old Town area. I love Logan, but the car is an issue there and I can't get much in my price range. I'm thinking Clarendon. I've just heard it's mainly people in their 20's and a big party scene.

After Dupont/Logan, maybe look at Capitol Hill along and on either side of Pennsylvania Avenue SE. 1st Street on over to Eastern Market and 8th Street-ish somewhere. Nice, urban, gay-friendly area still with a few bargains to be found. Various gyms. Nice, eclectic range of bars and restaurants.

There may be gay bars sprinkled throughout NOVA but unfortunately there is no confluence of gay-owned/friendly establishments that I am aware of. Convenience to DC for work and play may be a more important factor. Your budget is certainly generous for a 1BR apt in most any area here let alone the upmarket neighborhoods you are considering.

Then again, I imagine there would have to be social groups a la meetup.com where you might meet some new guy friends who share some common interests.

The neighborhood directly west of Clarendon is Ballston, which tends to have a slightly older demographic, and less of a party scene.
