Does anybody know of an affordable small fitness center in the above area? I was hoping to take exercise classes

If you have a friend who lives in a condo in the area, most condo communities have a gym they could use, you could use his condo gym priveleges

I used to go to the Oak Marr Rec Center in Oakton and bought a pass for a few months. They also ran specials during the winter months. I went about 3x a week to work out and then swim laps so I got my money's worth.

Not sure what you consider affordable, but X-Sport Fitness in Merrifield is an excellent gym. The standard rate is $50/mo, but you can get it for less than that for the first year you sign up as they always run special promos for new customers (if you pay upfront, I believe it averages to around $35/mo for the first year). If you're a govt employee you also get a discount of another $8/mo. They have lots of classes as my wife is a also member and really enjoys them.

As an added bonus, if you have kids, they have a nice little day care section in the gym (costs $1 per visit)...all of their cardio equipment come with their own little tv's and one of the channels is a live camera of what's going on in the day care. I've been a member of various gyms in the area over the years (Gold's, Lifetime, Sport and Health, Fitness First, etc.) and this is by far my favorite gym.
