I was about to tell SPHokie that he was had....my '98 Corolla has a timing chain. But, I did a little checking and '94 Corollas do indeed have a timing belt.

So blanket statements that Toyotas have chains is misleading...some do and some don't.

Yes not all Toyotas use timing chains. Even the same model, depending on the engine it may differ. I have a 4Runner and the V6 has a chain, while the V8 has a belt.

Also timing chains can still need maintenance, they just don't snap without warning like a belt will. Normally you'll start hearing some noise and that will indicate a replacement.

FYI - have them replace the thermostat as well. just a consideration since it's a cheap part that can cause havoc and your engine will be exposed anyway.

I would actually look into a mechanic off of Craigslist possibly. I got my timing belt and water pump changed for less than $500 total out here in Louisville thanks to a Craigslist mechanic.

Now before you raise skeptism, this guy actually worked in a real shop, has ASE certification, and was just looking to make some money on the side. I used him because most shops in Louisville have no experience changing timing parts in Hondas.
