If I were you, I think I might wait until I knew more about where the majority of travel would be and how much time I would be on the road relative to the base location. If for example you had to travel a LOT to PG County, MD, or Baltimore, you might want to pick a different home location from those you might consider if your travel were mostly to Richmond, or to the western part of Northern VA.

THis is all fantastic advice. I appreciate it. Do all the roads have tolls on them. What is the cost each way?

Only 267 and Greenway have tolls. I don't know the toll off hand, since I almost never take the toll road. I live in Sterling and have always worked in western Fairfax/eastern Loudoun. Rt. 7 is the road I mostly use. I have lived here off and on for more than 30 years and I think I've driven 267 maybe twice in all that time.

The toll on 267 at the Main Plaza near Tysons goes up from $1.25 to $1.50 on January 1. The on/off ramp tolls remain at 75 cents. How many of these you go though depends on the trip you take. Otherwise, you will have to drive to the Baltimore, Annapolis, or Richmond areas if you want to pay tolls. We only have the Dulles Toll Road/Greenway here in DC. Everything else is a freebie, or at least will be until the Beltway HOT lanes open...

Sagnista listed that rates for the Dulles Toll Road, but beware to the highway robbery on the Greenway. Rates are as high as $5.25 for a car.

Wonderful example of private-sector efficiency. Thank God for the Toll Road Investment Partners, LP. $5.25 to go less than 14 miles. Maybe somebody should Occupy the Greenway.

That's what we get for outsourcing the roads that our tax money help pay for! HOT lanes are going to experience the same phenomenon, you wait and see...

Greenway is a very useful road, IMO. It keeps those people who are in a big big hurry and have money to burn off the roads that the rest of us use. That's a good thing, in my book.

Plus the Greenway isn't a public road--it's a privately owned local business venture. I thought it was PC to support local business? Or does that only apply to businesses like restaurants? Speaking about restaurants, how is is a privately owned road charging what they think drivers will pay any different from a restaurant charging what they think someone will pay? The owners of the Greenway feel people are willing to pay for a speedy and uncongested drive (I guess they think their road is prime rib, for those drivers who want more than a hamburger). I don't drive the Greenway myself (and I also don't eat in the more expensive restaurants) but I don't resent that other people do. I'm happy to see a local business thrive.

I thought the Greenway was purchased by an Australian company?

I hadn't heard that, but you could be right. It wouldn't surprise me, but the analogy still stands. Local restaurants get bought by out of state companies all the time, too. Even if we remove the word local, does it change my point? It's a private business, and they can charge what they want. If you think it's too expensive, use the public roads.

Sounds like this could make a good topic for a new thread. I'll start one.
