There's no irony at all. People not from this area don't yet know much about local economics, including things such as what an average rental unit would go for here. That's where we come in. As was pointed out right away, $1500 is apartment money in Springfield. The OP is on the road to learning.

Just becausethe OP doesn't know about the local economy doesn't mean its not an ironic statement. It is. It wasn't a stupid or anything like that, but it was ironic. There is a difference.

Yes, it does. Irony is a deliberate departure from an existing standard, as in feigned ignorance or in purposeful creation of incongruity or inapplicability. In this case, while you are, the OP is not aware of the existing local standard, hence he or she cannot have willfully departed from it or contrasted to it. Ergo, no irony.

...The act of irony does not have to be deliberate and in many cases it is not.
