I appreciate all the replies! Since posting this, I have been looking more closely at Springfield. It looks like it offers more of what I'm searching for. And it has a Whole Foods!
I've also decided that we will not buy. Renting makes the most sense. It looks like I could get a decent place for less than 3000/month. Which is what we would be able to afford.
Nothing is set in stone yet. If we move, it will be after we are married, which takes palce in July. And my fiance is with the national guard. He's currently looking for a new base to fly at, and this one is top on our list. I'm not interested in living on base.
Eventually, if plans ever do progress, we will fly out there to scope the place out. I just needed some general direction.

For the purposes of this conversation, I'd like to define my idea of ghetto as being a place that is worn down because residents care more about doing drugs than going to work or mowing their lawns. A ghetto would be a neighborhood that would be unsafe to allow my son to walk to a nearby friend's house. A place where jogging around the neighborhood at night would be very unwise. Nearby stores would have their windows gated.
I understand that different people have different ideas about what "ghetto" really means. And I know that each town can have it's "good" spots and it's "bad" spots. As I mentioned before, I live in Fresno CA. And as another poster mentioned somewhere on here, many people have the idea that Fresno itself is ghetto. Well, downtown Fresno is indeed. But I actually live more on the east side, more towards Clovis, which is a very nice family-oriented town with a lot of suburb communities, and excellent schools. Northeast Fresno is also very nice, and has the nicer shops, good schools, and has a good vibe. I guess I'm looking for a place like similar to these areas in Fresno. And that's why I posted.
