Hey everyone, I am hoping for this story to have a positive conclusion. My neighbor's dog was suddenly startled by an unknown source yesterday morning (December 11th, 2011), at approximately 9:00AM, outside the Giant of the Northpoint Village Center in Reston, VA. As a result, the dog in question pulled out of his collar and bolted. This behavior was very unusual for this particular pup, and the owner immediately went looking for him. Witnesses saw the dog run off towards the nearby soccer fields, and further on he was spotted down Lake Newport Road, which makes us believe that he was attempting to head home, since he has traveled a similar route to the one reported thousands of times before (Normally on a leash, of course). We've posted flyers everywhere, and my Neighbor is doing everything possible to find their pup and bring him home safely. He is a very friendly Golden Retriever, and anyone could have easily picked him up in a well meaning manner, but since he lacks ID, the situation is obviously further compounded by such. Please get back to me if you happen across a lost Golden Retriever, especially in the area of question, or if you happen to see someone suddenly come into possession of one. Thank you folks, and prayers out for this pet and his great family!

Has your neighbor placed ads on Craigslist? Also alert local vet offices--I know in my community, when people find a lost pet, they usually first put out a community alert through email, then at the end of the day they will bring the pet to our local vets office. Is the dog micro chipped?

I posted here a few months ago when my coworker's dog ran off. She did find him 3 days later. A family had picked him up. They reported him online to the Fairfax County shelter (there is an online form for submitting found dogs and lost dogs). My friend also submitted her form. It took a day or two to match them up but the shelter did contact her. Make sure you do that. There is also a "petharbor" website where you can post in your area.

I would definitely call the shelters--even though you're in FFX, I'd contact Loudoun, Prince William, and Alexandria as well--you never know where someone could take the pup if they find it.

Very true! When I lived in Herndon a neighbor's dog ran away and somehow was found way out near Middleburg. When it's cold outside, animals sometimes seek shelter in vans or other vehicles and can be driven long distances before they're discovered. I sure hope your neighbor finds him and that you let us know how this turns out.
