We are considering buying a house in Haymarket, VA. However; I will be commuting into Washington, DC; Monday through Friday. Are there any buses that run between the two cities? How reliable are they?
Thank you for any tips or suggestions.

I'm not a regular commuter, so you'll want to get those inputs. But I find it to be 45 minutes with no traffic, 1 hour with moderate and in heavy traffic...bring your lunch. Not aware of any bus, think closest is Manassas.

You are in for a horrible horrible commute.. 1.5-2 hour for 1 way ..

you might be able to do it in 1 hour if you leave before 5:30 AM and leave office before 2:30 PM or after 8 PM.

I have a friend who used to live in Gainsville and commute to Faragut West. He was able to commute in one hour sometimes because he ride motorcycle and he ride very very fast (plus you can get on HOV lane). He did that commute for 8 months and quit the job and live happily ever after in Gainsville doing telecommuting work.

If I were you, I would definitely move closer and get smaller / older place close in. You will have less space to clean and access to a lot of great places!

You're best bet is to take the VRE from Broad-Run Airport to L'Enfant Plaza Station.. or Union Station. The parking is free at Broad-Run Airport. Buy a monthly pass on the VRE is most economical.

It got a little better in the area since they widened 66 there at Gainesville a few years ago, but once you get to Centreville, it's brake light city all the way to DC

It might be very horrible commuting from Haymarket to DC. Thank you all for your suggestions and comments. I guess I'd better settle in for a small and ugly house closer to DC.

on a similar note, where can I find 66 HOV ride share information. I drive from Bristow to NIH Bethesda, and trying to find some one local for ride share.

Driving takes me 1:30 hours, where VRE takes me close to 2 hours.

Even the commute from Haymarket to the Broad Run VRE is going to take a while...especially since he (she?) will have to cross over Rt. 29.

This past fall, my son had football practice several nights a week at Pace West school in Haymarket. We live in Bristow near the corner of Linton Hall and Sudley Manor--so our house is closer to Haymarket than the VRE station is... It still would take at least 25 minutes or so to get to practice each night.

you don't have to cross 29 at all to go from Haymarket to VRE. You get on 66, then to the 234 S parkway to the airport station. about 20 minutes in relatively light traffic.
