I actually just bought a ham labled "Pagan Brand Ham." Perhaps this is what you're looking for? I picked it up from Central Meats in Chesapeake. They're a full service butcher, so I believe they will ship you the ham if you call them. I took a pic, so that you can see what it looks like:

Wow -- thank you very much for the good information. You are going to enjoy that ham -- it is delicious. As I said -- I have eaten a lot of ham and that is a particularly good ham. Enjoy!

Pagan Ham Update -- found a whole ham at the Magruders in Vienna -- and it was only $2.19 per pound!! They only had two of the hams and I bought one -- lots and lots of MASH hams but the Pagan ham is vastly superior, IMHO. Of course I now have this GIGANTIC whole ham and will have to have my entire family over to eat it sometime during the holiday season.

I just bought a Pagan Gwaltney Ham here in Williamsburg Farm Fresh after attempting to buy one at Smithfield,s Ham Store downtown. The clerk there did not know what I was talking about. Neither is one mentioned in their gift catalog of ham gifts. Farm Fresh, go figure. 12/18/2012

Hey -- it is one year later but thanks for reminding me that I need to go to Magruders and get one of their two PAGAN hams that they order each year. It really is a delicious ham.

I have searched high and low for delicious Pagan ham. I think they simply don't make it anymore. So sad. It was the best ham ever!

Default Independent Ham

I too fondly remember the Pagan Brand ham. I went to the Smithfield's site and confirmed that it has been discontinued. I wondered why and tried to track down the reason why.

What I found is interesting but somewhat disturbing. Much of what we think of as individual brands of ham ( Cook's Ham, Gwaltney, John Morrell, Krakus Ham, Patrick Cudahy, Smithfield, and Stefano's) are actually all product produced by a large Chinese conglomerate (though individual farms and plants are in the US).

Smithfield Foods - WOW.com

If you really want a classic Virginia ham, there are still a few small independent producers around. I believe the closest local one is Edwards in Surry VA. Your local independent butcher shop (there are a few around) may have more contacts with family-run businesses that produce hams.
