My son has just started playing rated chess tournaments and I found that there were quite a few kids and parents who are passionately involved in the game.

It will be really helpful for newbie like me if parents could post their experience and suggestions regarding tournaments in the northern neck.

thanks in advance

My kids play most of their tournaments in DC (at the US Chess Center) or in Fairfax (at Greenbriar West).

DC is kind of a drive for me Is Greenbriar west tournament still being run at the school? I attended one at McNair ES and folks there mentioned it is the same tournament that has moved from Greenbriar to McNair. I also attended one organized by SilverKnights chess and found it bit organized.

My daughter has played in the Loudoun Chess | Playing hard and having fun. tournaments. I know they have chess tournaments in schools all around the area on this site. Prince William County's tournaments are listed on this site as well.

It's best for me not to say anything re: SilverKnights chess.

I am guessing you have already reviewed the information on the USCF Tournament Clearinghouse page. We get our tournament information from there as well as the US Chess Center's website.

The last time we were at Greenbriar West for tournaments was in the summer. Next tournament for us is in January (in DC) and we're thinking about Baltimore in February.

OrangeFish

Thanks for sharing the tournament link - I really had not seen it before. Just the kind of information I needed.

Default Any recommendation for online chess club?

ICC seems to be the oldest but not sure if it is the best as well (I am not a chess player). There are others like chess.com, chesstempo.com etc. Wondering which one is the best for improving and practicing the game? Any suggestion is highly appreciated.

My kids play on ICC and also play on mobile devices (iPod Touch and Galaxy Tab) and then load their games on ICC. From there they can analyze their games with others (such as their chess coach) and they can analyze their games using chess apps. We like Stockfish but there are other games as well. You can also buy a copy of Fritz and load the .pgn files that way.
