And that reminds me: In Baltimore, there's at least one super old-school Italian grocery store. I think the one I visited may have been Trinacria's. I remember they don't take credit cards, but they do take personal checks.

Baltimore seems to have more numerous and more authentic Italian shops, all within the downtown area. Worth a drive sometime.
Interesting. This is great info.

Thanks, everyone, for cluing me in. I just need a place for San Marzano tomatoes, Ca**** flour, etc.

Where in Fairfax County are located? Over in my neck of the woods (Alexandria/Mount Vernon) there's The Italian Deli in the Belle View shopping center that carries a pretty good selection of Italian food products including pastas, sauces, cookies and candies. They also make cannoli on the premises along with some really good antipasti. Not quite the variety you'll find at The Italian Store but its convenient if you're over here. Balduccis in Old Town is another spot.

If you're interested in cooking real Italian (not Italian American) the Italian Club in DC has an arrangement with a local chef from Italy who teaches monthly cooking classes. It's even more fun if you speak the language.
