I am relocating to northern Virginia and am excited about that. How bad is the traffic from Idylwood to Reston on weekdays? Or should I look for an apartment near Reston?

It's not bad at all, but it's not as good as it used to be. It's a reverse commute, but that doesn't always help all that much. 35-40 minutes should take care of it. There are various different ways you can go. One might work out a little better than another depending on your preferences and actual start and destination points.

Both Idylwood and Reston are nice places to live. Reston is a little further out and doesn't (yet) have a nearby Metro station but it would be super-convenient for work. Idylwood gives you really good access to everything else you could think of, but you would have the commute to do each day.
