I have couple of desktops sitting at home that I would like to donate for non profit for possible tax deduction.

I dont want to ship them, trying to find something local ( Northern VA)

Any recommendations ?

Desktops are running Windows 7 Ultimate, 4GB RAM,512MB Video card, 550GB HD, P4 Dual core processor, CD RW Drive, DVD RW Drive

Thanks

I think you could just donate them to Goodwill and still take the deduction. You might contact a group like United Christian Ministries (UCM) to see if they could put them to more productive use, if that's your intent.

I donated mine a few years back to Cristina Foundation www.cristina.org

They did come pick them up.

I concur with the Goodwill suggestion. Goodwill refurbishes and sells computers and the profits from those and all other Goodwill store sales fund their workforce development programs. Just check their website for the closest site.

Consider donating your equipment to Computer Core. This is a local charity (its headquarters is in Alexandria) that uses donated computer equipment to teach modern computer-aided office skills to undereducated adults, especially the immigrant population. They are also constantly looking for volunteers as well to not only refurbish and manage computers, teach computer skills such as Microsoft Office but also provide professional job coaching such as interview techniques, personal time management, etc. You can either just donate your equipment, or you can interview them, or even get involved as a tutor/coach.

We donate to Salvation Army. Please check SA Donation Value Guide for details (link below). You can either call them for pick up or deliver your items there. They will give you a receipt.

Thanks for the input.

Salvation Army said, They will provide the receipt, and I have to determine the market value for tax deduction. How do I figure out the market value ?

What happens If I assess the item too high (say $500 for example) for my desktop, who does the audit ?
