That would end up costing as much as an overnight at a nice hotel, which she already said isn't in the budget.

these are all great suggestions. Thank you. But, yes, we are on a tight budget. At first we wanted to go away for the weekend. We were going to go to Staunton, but then we ended up having to move quickly (landlord sold the house) and then Christmas came and so we are a bit tight right now. We will most likely pack lunch and then go to a nice dinner somewhere and just spend the day together with out the kids. We just weren't sure where to go really. Thank you

You can go to Winchester. You can try Berkeley Springs, WV or St. Michael's, MD. They are all nice day trips. And as much as I like it, I think Williamsburg is a bit far for the day.

Harpers Ferry is another spot not that far away. How about the horse races at Charlestown?

Another option would be a drive to Luray Caverns and up along Skyline Drive and then down through Sperryville where you can do some antiquing and then visit Washington, VA one of my favorite towns. A couple of nice places to eat out that way would be the Blue Rock Inn just outside of Washington or 4 and 20 Blackbirds in Flint Hill.
