I read in the Washington Examiner today that starting next school year (2012-2013), students will be expected to wear a clip on pedometer 24/7 and track their eating habits for a set amount of days.

Seriously?

Has anyone else heard of this new policy?

More info? All students? Certain ages? For a particular class? Just athletes? For a week? A month?

I can totally see this happening in the quarter long health classes in middle school. The kids would love it.

I just reread the article.

It looks as though students will be expected to keep fitness/nutrition logs but it doesn't say that these logs will have to be turned in or that the information will be given to the county for research purposes.

Parents can also request that their children wear the pedometers during P.E. class only.

Brilliant!!!!! So who pays for these pedometers when they end up dropped in the toilet?

Can a student fail at walking and eating? How long before a parent is brought before the institution for "letting your child eat too much of the wrong thing"?

I'll stay in PWC.

Wow.
All because some kids are encouraged to sit in front of TV and video games for hours
and eat chips and drink soda.
Not go outside and run around for several hours, and drink lots of water.

Nanny state, big-time.

This isn't anything new. I had to track my eating habits for a month at various points in my school career. I wasn't graded on them, they didn't go to administration, it was just helping me learn how to balance out meals and be more self aware of what I was eating. This was 15+ years ago on the opposite coast.

I imagine the pedometers will be used similarly. They'll teach students to set healthy goals and learn how to measure physical activity in a new way. I imagine the kids will eat it up--it involves a gadget, and is personalized to them.

So to speak.....

I have no problem with educating students on physical fitness, but in today's society incessantly focused on eating, it's not some big mystery of what makes you fat. Even my 4 yr old knows what's good for him. Why fight 150 minutes a week of physical fitness but spend the $$$ on thousands of pedometers and put more requirements on the kids?
