Can anyone recommend a bakery near Fairfax/Burke where I can buy a very good German Chocolate cake? Grocery store cakes of this kind are not very good and my go-to bakery (Swiss Bakery) does not make them. It seems that Amphora in Vienna and Victoria's Bakery in Fairfax carry them so if you have any personal experience with either, please share your thoughts. Thank you.

The best bakery in the world, as far as I'm concerned, is Pastries by Randolph on Lee Highway in Arlington--about 10 minutes from exit 71 on I-66. I don't think I've had their German chocolate, but their white-chocolate mousse cake is unreal. The best cake I have ever eaten, anywhere. And I don't even like white chocolate! (I LOVE dark, bitter chocolate.) But the mousse on it is just sweet enough to taste good but neutral enough to allow me to eat a massive slice.

Whatever you do, skip Heidelberg bakery down the street. (Inferior product and surly service.)

I've sampled a cake or two from Victoria's Cakery in Fairfax City and they were really good.

Swiss Bakery makes an amazing Black Forest cake -- yummmm!

I had no idea they did not make German chocolate cake.

I suggest Alexandria Pastry Shop on King Street, over near Fairlington. They are in the Bradlee Shopping Center on the west side of the shopping center.

In case anyone didn't know, German chocolate cake has nothing to do with Germany. It was named after an American named Sam German.

That explains a lot. Because the coconuts they grow in Germany are really puny.

The German Chocolates (as well as most of the cakes) at Amphora are delicious!

I've never tasted a bakery-made German chocolate cake that comes anywhere near a homemade one. If you can find the time to make one, it's not hard and the recipe's right on the German's chocolate box.

I think the recipe was orginally called "German's Chocolate Cake"

Amphora is supposed to be a great bakery! I've only drooled over their display, though, as I'm a save-pennies-bake-at-home gal. but theirs are really beautiful!
