I'm in the same boat as you. I wear contacts, but pretty much only have glasses in case something happens. I have a year old pair of glasses that I may have worn 6 times that all of a sudden has stripped screws that the eye place can't fix. They tried to talk me into buying new glasses for them. I don't think so! This sounds like exactly what I need.

I like Dr. Whitescarver, who is part of Dr. Larry London's practice in Arlington over near VA Square. They seem to have a good selection and they have incredible service.

Yes I totally agree. The optometrists and staff are excellent.

Man...I don't care about the service. What matters to me is if they can make great lenses. It's an art to make lenses as thin and aesthetically pleasing as possible. Otherwise, I can get so-so service at Lens Crafters with mediocre lens quality. I can have great service in many places, but if they can't do their own lenses, what's the point?

Is there really a lot or variation in lenses from one store to the next? Don't a very small number of suppliers produce all the lenses under a variety of different names?

I go to Lens Crafters. I wear glasses every single day and take them off and fold them every single day. I've had these glasses for just over 2 years now. I broke my glasses after taking a fall on the ice and hitting my head about 3 months after I got them (and of course I didn't buy insurance). Well, Lens Crafters was able to give me the same pair of frames at 50% off and put the lenses I had on my broken ones into the new ones the very next day while I waited. I was super happy. I've been getting glasses from them for the last 18 years.

Zenni Optical is by far the best. Before I go further, no I am not endorsed by Zenni Optical but yes, my eyes require glasses.

I have 3-4 pairs of Zenni glasses and sunglasses. Several years ago as I was looking at my bill from LensCrafters and then from my eyedoctor for the new pair of glasses I was angered by the words $100 for anti-scratch, $50 extra for 'special lens', $200 for frames, $50 for fitting, $50 for appointment, $25 for exam, etc.... What kind of anti-scratch protection is $100 anyways?

I learned about Zenni Optical and the way to go about it. You might be unsure how to order glasses online without a prescription and without the infamous 'PD distance' that is casually left off of prescription forms. Eyedoctors know this and use it as leverage to buy from them. Don't let them persuade you. It is your right to know the PD as much as it is your right to know the rest of your prescription.

Got my eye exam done at Costco for $50 and for the past several years have bought my own eyeglasses for just a fraction of what it would cost me elsewhere.

Zenni Optical customer service example:

The nose pads of one of my glasses fell off and I needed new ones. I emailed them and they sent me not only new pads, but extra pads, + a new eyeglass box in less than a week. Now that is what I call customer service!

You can go to the independent doctors next to LensCrafters and they include ALL the information. I used that to order RX motorcycle glasses before. The issue with online is that you don't get to try them on and as we know - one pair of glasses can look great but crappy on the individual.

Also - if you went to LensCrafters I'm not sure how you got all of that 'odd' stuff on your bill. They do talk to you about different lenses, anti-glare, etc. I already know which lens I want and what type before I go in and some will cost more than others. I always look at my bill and have not been charged for an exam that didn't take place, an appointment that didn't happen, etc.

My issue with the regular eye doctor is that sometimes they have a hard time parting with the RX because they don't want to let you out the door without buying glasses from them. But often times, I find the $$ too high and selection not to be where I need it. I am quick to find my frames but if there aren't enough to pick from....
