Virginia Bases maintain a list of about 25 states that have inadequate or none existant inspections. If you are registered in one of those states you have to get a Virginia inspection in order to get your vehicle on base. Even if your state is not on the list having a VA inspection is acceptable.

That's fair. At least the cars will be safe and legal in the adopted state.

Getting the thread back on track - I'm gonna say they're probably visitors. Either way though it's a good thing for our economy as I doubt too many Virginians have left and we're likely seeing a net gain in consumer spending from it.

The Ellis Island comment was hilarious and dead on. I was born and raised here in Norther Virginia and having gone to college elsewhere, it made me appreciate the area so much more. I guess you really start to notice if you go to Walmart on Rt. 1, or any of the malls - just how it represents a scene from the United Nations rather than some sort of demographic consistency. I'm not racist or anything, but it's just crazy the level of out-of-state people and out-of-country people that have populated the area as of late. Especially the out of state thing is limited to several states such as Texas, New Jersey, Oregon, and such -mostly people who come here with no ties or affiliation and are out of place. I guess it's sort of a rant but more curiosity than anything.

I think that is irrelevant - yes it's good for the va economy - but only so much. Copious amounts of people inflate the prices of houses temporarily and clog the roadways with traffic - resulting in detrimental affects. It is good for corporations like Macys when someone comes from Oregon w/only their suitcase and little clothes. But for average people I'd say it's more of a problem than not. Police and schools have higher ratio of people to teacher. I don't know that it's a great thing to have 250k relocated to the area within a short time period. Maybe in the short run it's good or short run it's bad, who knows.

I'm from eastern Ohio where there are few jobs, and we're seeing lots of out-of-state license plates lately. I've seen Cleveland and Pittsburgh forums (fora? fori?) on the same theme, so it's not just a Virginia thing.

Got that right.

I'm not a native of NoVA. I spent 14 years in Hampton Roads then 6 in Northern VA, and coming up on two in Louisville, KY. As most on this forum will tell, I could not wait to get out of here about two years back. I felt so out of place unto what I was accustomed to in Hampton Roads. I moved to an area that was like a much smaller scale Hampton Roads outside of Louisville initially. It was not long to realize why my mother moved us up to NoVA from Hampton Roads. Lack of opportunity. I endured a good 9 months of underemployment and unemployment and now I'm in a dead-end job that will eventually be eliminated. The lack of opportunity here places a big black cloud over what is a decent place to live in Louisville.

Now I'm not totally in love in DMV and likely won't ever be but I appreciate all the economic opportunity there. I have a co-worker who has a degree in Small Business Management but scrapes by the same $12 an hour I do and works a second crappy retail job. I see that and say obviously this is not where I need to be for opportunity even though I hated admitting my mother's advice was correct.

People were just saying the same thing on the Raleigh forum. The truth of the matter is, our population is MUCH more transient than in prior generations. And in many places, the economy stinks. Combine the two, and there is a lot of movement. Fortunately, we live in the United States, so we don't need a passport to move around!
