I was wondering if anybody could tell me what the school districts in Northern Virginia are like? Are they suffering with budgets, are they hiring very little some or a lot and what is the competition like? Here in Pennsylvania many teachers are being laid off and its hard for new graduates to find jobs? My wife is looking for a teaching job here but we aren't sure what to expect.

Definitely not "suffering". There have been a few pay freezes the past few years, but other than that I really haven't noticed any cuts in the classroom. Nobody has been laid off that I know of. They have to hire just to keep up with student increases and attrition.

No budget issues here in Fairfax County.

Remember that VA, and MD, school systems are organized and operate differently than those in PA. They're organized on a County basis so a system like Fairfax County will have a couple dozen high schools, at least twice that many middle schools and three or more times elementary schools.

Also, while salaries are generally higher than in PA, so is the cost of living.

While systems in MD have been retrenching the last two or three years they're still hiring due to attrition, as are VA's.
