Default "Nearly 10 times as many people come to work in Arl. as Arlingtonians go to work outside Arl."

A neighborhood association newsletter column that was discussing the obligations of developers to pay for certain things or provide "community benefit" cited this statistic (though the original source wasn't included).

I thought this was interesting given the recent thread on commuter taxes and DC's speed traps and camera tickets.

Interesting stat. I question whether it's accurate. Almost everyone on my street works in DC, as do my relatives who also live in Arlington.

Since Arlington encompasses Pentagon City, the Pentagon and Crystal City - it's not surprising.

And, don't forget about the many lower-paying jobs in retail (e.g., grocery stores, hair/nail salons, Pentagon City Mall, Clarendon shops, and many restaurants) and services (e.g., plumbing, electrical, home repair, landscaping, cleaning).

Those jobs generally are not filled by Arlingtonians but by people from DC, Fairfax, MD, and elsewhere, some of whom choose jobs there because the metro and buses make it easier to get to work than to similar jobs in other locations.

I'd be interested in seeing the original statistic and knowing how much is due to Pentagon employees who choose to live elsewhere. The Pentagon reportedly remains the single largest office building in the country.

I found this old (March 2011) presentation citing the principal government and private employers in Arlington (see pages 19 and 20).
