WWe just moved here. We're traveling to Lexington, VA this weekend. We live in Belle View, right off the 95/495/Hwy 1 interchange. So it's easy for us to hop on I-95 South. But I don't know where the 95 HOV lane starts.

Can anyone tell me what's a better route-95 South (to 64) or 66 to 81? We thought about my husband taking the metro West to Vienna, where the kids and I could be waiting and hop on 66. Or he could take the VRE to Fredericksburg and we could hop on 95. But if the 95 HOV lane isn't that bad on a Friday (we will probably be leaving around 6) we'll just leave from our house.

Again, we just moved here, so I don't know which highways are the worst and where HOV starts. Does 66 have an HOV lane?

Thanks!

66 does have an HOV lane. I don't know where the HOV for 95 starts. I avoid it at all costs. Good Luck!

If you are coming from the beltway, you would be able to get into the HOV South lanes right past the mixing bowl (the first entrance is between Springfield and Newington). Depending on the time you are entering, it is VERY heavy there. That would be about 2:30-3:15. After that, it clears out as all the single riders are forbidden.

You will have a good ride from there to Quantico. Then, the HOV lanes start backing up as people prepare to merge into regular traffic. It will be a bad drive from there past Fredericksburg.

Friday evening is probably the worst time to travel I-95 South. Your only saving grace is that it is not the summer time yet so the brutality has not reached its peak.

I-66 has HOV that ends around Fair Oaks or Gainesville I believe. I-66 is also a nightmare on Fridays.

What time are you leaving.

Leaving time depends on when my husbands gets off work. ideally he would leave at 5 and take metro to our house (getting there around 530) or metro/VRE to meet us.
Would we be ok on 66 past Vienna?

No, you would not. I-66 is bad. You are almost better waiting until about 7-8 PM and then leaving your home. You will avoid a lot of slow speeds at that point.

I think you will be sitting in lots of traffic on both 95 and 66 at that hour.

Leave after 6:45 p.m. Fridays are horrendous.

Dang. Even for HOV-3?
What about 95 past Fredericksburg? Is that bad? He could meet us there on the VRE (we would already be there for the day)

At that time of day, your best bet will be to meet at the Fredericksburg VRE and get on Route 3 headed west (even though that is a back road, it will be less congested), take that road (it changes route numbers a couple of times to 15) to Charlottesville and pick up I-64 in Charlottesville, take that to I-81 south to Lexington.

You don't want to be entering the HOV on 95 around 6pm. That's when it become unrestricted.
