Any recommendations of companies/agents? USAA, which is my favorite insurer and who will probbly do the mortgage (if the deal works out), won't insure, anywhere, if we aren't there a majority of the time (we'll be in another country-- long story).

Have you asked USAA what other solutions they can find? When I bought my house in the DC area, USAA started out by telling me they couldn't do a primary residence mortgage for me because I was buying from overseas and wasn't going to move in within the required period (90 days, I think). When I asked them for a solution, they suggested a second home/vacation home mortgage with the same interest rate but slightly higher fees. They were happy to write the insurance policy on the second home mortgage and never said anything about being in it a majority of the time. I have a hard time believing they won't insure a house if you aren't in it a majority of the time. If that is the case, they'll have to turn down all the homes military officers own every time they transfer, and I can't imagine them doing that to their main customer base.

Good luck overseas. There aren't too many of us old-timers who remember the old FSI in Rosslyn...

Progressive is the cheapest we've been quoted.
