I wouldnt call it a mega disaster, it was a failure to secure sheeting and shoring during excavation of the unoccupied skyline tower (all of 15 stories if I recall). Metro was cancelled through there, hopefully a new light rail system can reinvigorate the pike to its hay day

I had always wondered why Skyline had that many high rises when the road system was terrible and there was nothing there but ratty stripmalls. It's reflected in the prices of those units too...

except there was a hi rise built near there later, there are hirises up route 7 (munson towers?) etc, etc. I dont know the full skyline story, but I suspect its more the typical NoVa towers in the park story than it is a serious expectation of a metro line.

The wikipedia entry is called the “Skyline Towers collapse”-

It was the beginning of new standards for construction in this area, so good came out of the collapse, there are now much more stringent regulations against expediting construction practices before concrete has properly been set and several other standards were enacted into law in light of this event, it is a shame that nearly 20 people died in order for these standards to be enacted and enforced, but we have not seen anything in DMV since this event anywhere close to this failure in management/construction so hopefully the laws have worked.
