I'd look for an acre or two in Clarke or Frederick County. Once you sell your place, you can get a place in Purcellville, Leesburg, Ashburn, etc., that suits your needs. Keep in mind HOAs do restrict what you can do in some areas.

I live in Ashburn with my two pitties and there are several in my neighborhood. That being said, a rental might be a little challenging. I would recommend Craigslist- look for a private owner, expect to pay a pet fee (maybe per dog) and offer liability insurance to alleviate concerns. Woofies is a dog walking company in Ashburn that walks a lot of pits and bully breeds. You could contact them to see if they have suggestions.

We moved to VA from MA several years ago (2006) and recently moved back to MA. But when we moved to VA we rented a townhouse at the Townes at Herndon Center in Herndon and I worked in Herndon. In 2008, we bought a house in Ashburn, so I had the Ashburn->Herndon commute. The Herndon to Ashburn commute will be really easy because you're heading in the opposite direction from traffic... which is headed from Ashburn to points east. You'll be going west.

The Townes at Herndon Center was really dog friendly, and although a bit on the pricey side, we liked it a lot. It was 2-3 bedrooms, depending on what size you got, and very well maintained.
