It's very possible I may be moving work from Front Royal to Tysons Blvd in the next few weeks. (No, not happy) I'll come from Manassas and headed to Tysons Blvd. I can start at 615 AM and leave for home at 3 PM. I get onto 66 west every morning at 0530-0545 at PW Pkway and see the already steady stream of traffic coming through Gainesville and Haymarket. I'll probably go up 28 to 66 for the new ride. For those doing this commute what time frame should I plan on with leaving in the morning?

Thanks

3am. Just kidding. I hope someone can chime in for you. You'll be ok coming home once you get on 66 which isn't too bad and 28 will be stop and go but nothing horrible (maybe I've just gotten used to it). But as for leaving in the morning....I don't know. And that was ultimately your question now wasn't it .

There is no good way other than to say get on 66, get on at 123, and drudge through Vienna. Its gonna take about 30-40 minutes from Manassas to Vienna I would estimate, and another 25 to 30 minutes to Tysons Blvd on 123. There are tricks once you get off 66 through vienna to help out like getting on Gosnell etc that if you get a bit sneaky you will find. But provide yourself atleast 75 minutes, and most days you should get therein about 65. Afternoon is worse than morning, closer to 80-90 minutes I would guess from the handful of times I have driven to my friends place in Bristow on friday afternoons.

Sorry that your job shifted, that does suck. I see a lot of Woodbridge connectors to Tysons, is there a manassas equivalent? Atleast then the bus can move through the HOV right?

Just to help you gauge from 28 to Nutley (my commute includes this part). I get on 66 at 28 around 6:45 and am at Nutley around 7:05 or 7:10 at the latest. The only slow down, usually, is at the merge of 50, which is not bad. The traffic after Nutley to the beltway at that time is pretty open, though I'm not sure what happens at the beltway merger. I suggest trying to exit at Nutley, go towards Vienna, turn at Tawpawingo, then to Park Street, then to Locust, then to Branch and then up to Maple (123). You skip most of the lights in Vienna and the traffic. Just a suggestion.

When I used to work in Tysons and lived in Fairfax, I found a "secret passage" from Rt 50 to the back of Vienna via Vale Road. It is a two lane road but it moves pretty well.

The worst backups occur right after the US-50/ I-66 merge so get off 66 at Rt 50 East, take the first left onto Waples Mill Rd and go that way. Use Google Maps to find all the turns, but look for Vale Road to Church Street in Vienna. Of course once you're in Vienna all bets are off but at least this may knock a few minutes off your time.

Give 123 a try and then use Vale Road and see if your time savings is worth the back road driving.

Depending on where you are going in Tysons, I would suggest using the Gosnell trick

So revise that to be Park st turn right on Maple Ave, left on Beulah, right on creek crossing road, then left on gosnell. Avoids alot of the 123 back up (more so in the evenings on the way back)

Definitely stay off of Maple Ave as much as possible.

Sorry people of Vienna for telling people how to drive through your neighborhoods, I hope when silver line opens up some of 66 and tysons traffic lightens up and people won't have to do this any more.

Wow. You people aren't giving me much confidence in my decision here. 65 - 75 minutes when I would get there at 615? Seems a little long. Anyone else?

I don't envy you...unless of course this new job pays like a jillion dollars, then I do envy you. Just not the commute.

Oh!!!! wait sorry, you are gonna be getting there at 6:15?
That changes alot, ok so don't mess with Vienna, Drive down 66 all the way to 495 and come up that way. That early in the day if you leave at 5:30 you should get there no problem by 6:15.

Yikes how did I overlook that. Yer fine leaving at that time, what time do you plan on heading back home? Because the afternoons are just as (and often more so) hellish

These people are vastly exaggerating. If you leave at like 530, you will sit in very very little traffic if any. There's definitely not enough traffic to avoid taking the beltway into Tysons as there is no traffic at the hour. I'd say it will take you about 40 mins. Traffic doesn't start to get really bad on 66 until about 630.

Your way home will probably have a little more traffic but it shouldn't be that bad at 3PM. I would say it shouldn't take you more than 50 minutes.

I would advise against going through all those lights on 28. The parkway and 66 would be much faster. It depends on what part of Manassas you live in.
