Will be starting a new position soon in DC. I have place that allows me to use the VRE but I have never riden the train (or metro for that matter) into DC. I will catch the 304 or the 306 (6:05/6:30 AM) train in Quantico and get off at L'Enfant station--reversing that in the evenings leaving at 5:23 or 6:08 PM.
I do have a few questions and hoping someone can assist with answers:
1) Do the trains generally run on time?
2) How crowded are the train cars--is seating generally available?
3) Do the conductors announce the stops or is it annouced via loud speakers that no one can understand?
4) Is L'Enfant easy to navigate once you get off the train?

and finally if someone could offer any tips (try the 1st or last train car, don't bring a coffee on the train, etc) for riding the VRE that also would be great.

I am not new to communting and rode the metra into Chicago for some time.

Hey there,

1) For the most part the VRE is pretty good at being on time (atleast for me), however you can always check for delays on their website or by watching the local news.

2) For my trains there are always plenty of seats when I get on. However, I live in Fredericksburg (moving to McLean soon) which is the first stop. Along the way it gets much more crowed; nevertheless I think you should be good at Quantico.

3) Yes, they do.

4) Well, since it does have 4 (soon to be 5) lines I'm sure it'll be confusing at first but Metro is actually pretty simple and it shouldn't take to long to get the hang of it!

Good Luck!

1) I've found the VRE generally runs on time. There are delays for things like when it's really hot, they have to slow down on some sections etc.

2) If you're getting on Quantico you should be fine. I get on at Woodbridge and there are still seats available and that's on the 306.

3) It's announced on loud speakers and there is also a digital board that displays the next station.

4) I get off at L'Enfant so I just go down the stairs and walk to my office. If you have to transfer to Metro, you'll have to go down the stairs/escalators to get into the station from the VRE platform.

You can bring coffee on the VRE. Not sure if you're doing a monthly pass, but I've noticed that some folks put their ticket in a plastic sleeve to display. I only use the VRE a few times a month so I use a 10 trip pass and just attach it to the back of the seat in front of me. The train attendants come by to make sure passengers have their tickets and they're validated. I like to sit upstairs because they have single seats. I'm not really interested in conversing with other passengers so I'll have my ear buds in and listening to music while reading a book.

VRE.org has a schedule. The trains run pretty close to schedule.

General Schedule Information - VRE

Well it also depends what time you're taking the train. In the morning, the 300 train has less stops so it takes 43 minutes from Woodbridge to L'enfant. The 302 train takes 48 minutes because it stops at all the stations.
