I noticed yesterday a sign on the front of the old Brenner's bakery a sign saying a place called "Bread and Water" would be opening there soon. Anyone know anything about it? All i could find online was some mention it would be a bakery. The name sounds like prison fare will be served. I'd have gone with something like "Bread and Circus" instead.

Bread and Water definitely isn't a good name. Sure miss Brenner's though! Every birthday cake I've ever had was from Brenner's, and my family would always get me a dozen "chocolate drops" every time I'd come home from college. Definitely some good memories...

Bread & Cricus was a Northeastern grocery store chain that was acquired by Whole Foods in the 1990s, and WF probably still owns the trademark on the name. It was strange the way Brenner's closed up shop, but a positive sign that a new bakery will be in the center soon.

I couldn‘t find much googling "Bread and Water". Possibly a new detention facility?

Would be awesome if they have the help wearing orange jump suits and bars on the windows.

it could be a new outpost of Bread & Chocolate, which has been a small chain in this area for years.

I remember reading that when it changed hands from the Brenner family it pretty much fell off fast. The new owner/staff lacked customer service skills, quality of the sweets went downhill (he tried his own recipes), yet the prices went up. He was behind on the lease and ended up closing up shop...Didn't Brenner's make the hamburger buns for the original 5 Guys?! Great place, was sad to see it go...

I didn't know Brenner's had closed but that's a shame because I know it was such a beloved institution. I was quite sad when Shuman's Bakery in Old Town closed. When I was planning my wedding nearly 30 years ago, their price was much less than their competitors but the cake was both beautiful and scrumptious. We ordered some other special-occasion cakes and it was a treat to stop into for lunch or a snack. Sounds like Brenner's was the same kind of place.

Always struck me as a "shortening bakery" like ones I remember from the old days before the foodie revolution. I'm not sure a block of real butter ever passed through those doors. I'll pay more for premium ingredients. There are quite a few nice bakeries in the area now so they'll need something to differentiate them from the rest. Unfortunately the center restricts what tenants can sell so as to limit duplication. For example the Italian deli can't make pizza because of Primos at the other end. This can really put a crimp in branching out beyond a core offering.

My hope is they sell some really great bread as that's hard to find anywhere South of Old Town.

Indeed, they did, when they were at Glebe & Columbia, right next door to the Five Guys. I remember going into that store was like a time warp, getting the ticket from the staff to pay at the cashier by the door.
