Got a job as a FT staff with Northern VA Comm College. Since this is a state job, I see the probationary period is 1 year which is rather long. Overall, the amount of annual leave doesn't seem that much, but overall is NoVA CC a good place to work for? How often does the college do any layoffs? I would think lay offs probably occurs much rarely than other forms of gov institutions or privatge sector. I have seen the reviews from Glassdoor, but your inputs will be very much needed and appreciated.

I know a gal that retired from NoVa Community College after 30+ years, but she said often that she would never have stayed that long had it always been like it is now. Somewhere down the line, State employees became pawns in increasingly nasty political games. Republicans generally dislike public employees and the GOP is in total control of the Commonwealth.

My wife also worked for the State (different agency) for about 10 years until she'd had enough of being jerked around. After I put her on my Federal health coverage....she couldn't believe the difference from the State health insurance....they actually pay claims without a huge fight!

So, basically, State jobs stink. Lousy pay and lousy benefits....and yes, they would LOVE to lay you off. Whether circumstances allow it is another story...

Try to get on with the Feds...or even Fairfax County. Both are far superior employers than the State.

I have only served as adjunct faculty, but I have found the administration great to work with and supportive of adjuncts. The FT staff I worked with (albeit occasionally) have been professional and helpful. Not sure if that helps. (?)

I've been there for a bit over a year now and I think it's a good place to work for.
