Hi everyone,

Some advice is needed! I am relocating to the area this summer and I am currently on the hunt for an elementary teaching position. I've done my research and have applied to all the current openings within several districts. My big question is...how can I get an interview?? I am afraid that my application will simply be overlooked or lost in the shuffle. Should I email principals directly? I don't want to be too pushy or too passive. My top districts would be Arlington, Alexandria, Fairfax County, or Loudoun. Any advice?? If I were to send an email to a principal, what should my email state? I would obviously include my resume and cover letter, but what should I say about myself in the email so that they get a clear view of who I am as a teacher without it being too wordy (or annoying).

Thanks so much!

P.S. I know that within FCPS most of the major hiring is done in July (as I'm sure it is with most districts), but I am quite impatient and would LOVE to get an earlier interview/opportunity.

Seeing that you have already included Arlington, Alexandria, Fairfax, and Loudoun, have you also considered Falls Church City? Just a thought...

I'm right with you. I'm in the very coveted special ed with a general ed endorsement and am highly qualified in every subject. I have been guaranteed a job, but even I have to wait. Tom Petty really hit it on the nose.

Just out of curiosity: did you attend any job fairs?

Well it's wonderful that you are guaranteed a job! Do you mind if I ask what district? And no, no job fairs. I am a full-time teacher at the moment (first year) so I wasn't able to make any.

I was also guaranteed a job for September. I went to the Fairfax job fair in March and signed an early hire contract. I've been contacting principals but many have told me to try back in July. I think a lot of schools don't fully know their hiring needs yet.

We had to turn in our "intent" forms a week or so ago, and then the principals are meeting with each teacher individually in the coming weeks to discuss plans for next year. They are just now beginning to figure out needs for next year. Counselors are still working on figuring out schedules and what the needs for courses for next year based on enrollment and such.

I tried my heart out to get interviews in May/June last year, but really, nothing starts moving until July.

My wife just heard back from FCPS after applying a couple weeks ago and has an interview next week. She met with recruiters at a couple local job fairs here in PA, but both times had little interaction and was told to apply online, so that must be the primary means that the use. We know that specific vacancies will not be known until July, but is it possible/probable that they would offer her a position with the district before that and she would just have to wait to see which schools she could go to?
