I can't seem to find info in Northern Virginia re unassisted (regular) housing for. I'm looking for a regular apartment complex but one that rents to 55+ individuals as a general rule. I am not financially needy but prefer a more mature community in which to live. Maybe that makes sense to someone out there? I am over the income level necessary to qualify for senior housing.

There are certainly a number of 'active adult' communities either open or on the way in the NoVa area. A good collection of them can be found below. These tend to be upscale, a little pricey, and packed with amenities...basically tailored to those who are 55+ but still feel like 40. Might be someplace to start at least.

I definitely agree with Hoosone, who is looking for exactly what I'm looking for, too. Made the mistake of moving to a Senior Living community in independent living and I knew after a week it wasn't for me for a few more years at least! I'm moving out and it's going to cost me an arm and leg, but definitely worth it.

I would love a nice apartment with balcony, close to shops and restaurants, preferably with public transportation nearby, and with other "mature" residents who'd enjoy mah-jongg or going to the movies or a show, etc., for companionship and fun. I have no family nearby enough to do those things with, and although I don't mind dong them alone, it's nice to have a friend to share a laugh with.

There is a place in Sterling, Cascades Village, that is for "active adults over 55". I don't know any of the details, I drive by it often it is right on route 7 and walking distance to shops. Google it for more info. It is rental, which you are looking for. If you are looking to buy, I can send you more info privately.

That sounds like Dunbarton neighborhood which is in Braemar neighborhood that's in Bristow. Sounds confusing eh? On my way past there the past week or so, I saw a sign that the builder (Brookfield) is having a close out sale.

I am looking for the same thing. Only apartment rentals -- not the housing communities that are all the rage around here. Any ideas?

Use MRIShomes.com database and put 55+ in the "Remarks Keyword Search" box.

I found this one in Reston.
